“Si alguno viene a mí, y no aborrece a su padre y madre, a su mujer e hijos, a sus hermanos y hermanas, y aun hasta su propia vida, no puede ser mi discípulo.” Lucas 14: 26
Hace más de once años que cinco hombres cubanos partieron de su tierra, dejaron sus familias, sus amigos/as, sus profesiones , sus vidas- lo dejaron todo- para convertirse en discípulos de la paz con justicia. Así como en el Evangelio de Lucas, Jesús demando de sus discípulos/as un sentido amplio del concepto “familia”, Gerardo Hernández, Rene González, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino y Fernando González entendieron que se debían- al igual que Jesús- al bienestar de la humanidad- su familia amplia.
Estos cinco discípulos de la paz con justicia ayudaban a monitorear planes terroristas organizados contra Cuba desde la Florida por grupos cubanos de ultraderecha financiados por el gobierno de los EEUU. Los cinco héroes cubanos luchaban por el derecho que tiene el pueblo de Cuba a la autodeterminación y el derecho que tenemos todos/as a la vida libre del terrorismo. Por una lucha justa fueron encarcelados arbitrariamente. Sus casos presentan innumerables violaciones a los derechos humanos, incluyendo el que se les niegue visas a sus familiares para visitarles. El encarcelamiento de los Cinco es injusto e inmoral.
Gerardo Hernández, Rene González, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino y Fernando González escucharon el llamado a servir a la justicia y a contribuir a la creación de la paz. Lo arriesgaron todo por su familia- la humanidad.
Este domingo, 9 de mayo se celebra el dia de las madres en los EEUU. Al celebrar y honrar a las madres en nuestras vidas (sean estas madres biologicas o no), recordemos que nuestra familia no esta del todo completa. Recordemos que los Cinco aun estan en secruestados por el sistema injusto de los EEUU; recordemos también el amor persistente y esperanzado de las compañeras y madres de los Cinco quienes continuan demandando su libertad; recordemos y reafirmemos nuestro compromiso hacia nuestra familia trabajando por la reunificacion de los cinco con sus seres queridas/os.

A Militant Mother's Day for the Cuban Five
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14: 26
More than eleven years ago five Cuban men left their country, their families, their friends, their careers, their lives- they left it all behind- to become disciples of peace with justice. As in the Gospel of Luke, where Jesus understood the call, and demanded that his disciples broaden their concept of “family,” Gerardo Hernández, Rene González, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino and Fernando González understood - as Jesus did- that their lives where tied to the wellbeing of humanity- their family.
These five disciples of peace with justice were helping to monitor terrorist plans being organized in Florida by ultra rightwing Cubans against Cuba with funding from the US government. These Cuban heroes fought for Cuba’s right to self-determination and the right we all have to a life free of terrorism. They were arbitrarily imprisoned for a just cause. Their cases present countless violations of their human rights, including the denial of travel visas for their family member’s visits. The imprisonment of the five is immoral and unjust.
Gerardo Hernández, Rene González, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino and Fernando González heard the call to serve justice and contribute in the creation of peace. They risked all for their family- humanity.
On Sunday, May 9th people in the United States will celebrate Mother’s Day. As we celebrate and honor the mothers in our lives (whether they are biological mothers or not) let us remember that our family is not complete. Let us remember that the Cuban Five are still kidnapped by the unjust system of the U.S; Let us remember the persistent and hope-filled love of the wives and the mothers of the Cuban Five who continue to demand their freedom; Let us remember and reaffirm our commitment- as part of a larger family- to work towards the reunification of the Cuban Five with their loved ones.
