La Iglesia San Romero de Las Américas celebro el día de los padres y el séptimo domingo de Pentecostés dándole la bienvenida a nuestro hermano y compañero de lucha, Ismael Guadalupe- reconocido internacionalmente por su trabajo pro-independencia de Puerto Rico, y por la liberación y restauración de la isla de Vieques (La Isla Nena). Ismael nos recordó firmemente “ ¡la lucha de Vieques continua!”
Celebramos el día de los padres, a la luz del Evangelio de Lucas (9: 18-24) y escuchando el testimonio de nuestro hermano mientras reflexionamos sobre la responsabilidad que tenemos como cristianos(as), revolucionarios(as) y/o personas creyentes y practicantes de la paz con justicia en la construcción de un mundo nuevo y mejor- ahora!. Ismael nos recordó que el pueblo de Vieques y la comunidad solidaria internacional gano una parte de la lucha sacando a la marina criminal estadounidense de la Isla Nena. Mas sin embargo, la lucha no acabo cuando salio la marina. Aun existe el desplazamiento que alimenta el capitalismo, y deja a las familias viequenses sin hogar. La población viequense aun sigue desarrollando cáncer. Ismael nos dijo “ El pueblo de Vieques esta enfermo. Los peces estan en aguas contaminadas. Y nosotros nos comemos esos peces. Lo mismo con la vegetación.” El testimonio de Ismael, que es el testimonio del pueblo de Vieques, del pueblo Palestino, del pueblo Vietnamita y de todos los pueblos del mundo que han sido colonizados; es tambien, el testimonio de resistencia de todos los pueblos del mundo que no pierden la esperanza y estan dispuestos(as) a seguir luchando hasta lograr la sanación, el bienestar colectivo, la liberación. Su testimonio, como el evangelio de Jesús, es un llamado a tomar nuestra cruz y seguir caminando hasta la victoria.
Si bien es cierto que los problemas causados por la avaricia de unos pocos, causa la escasez para muchos(as). Tambien es cierto que el compromiso firme, consistente y ardiente del pueblo de Puerto Rico por su descolonización da esperanza de que el pueblo el fuerte y no se rinde ante los que oprimen. ¡Que vivan los Estudiantes en huelga!
Si bien es cierto que la marina y el imperialismo estadounidense insiste en hacer de vieques una tierra muerta con gente enferma y un mar venenoso. Tambien es cierto que el pueblo de la Isla Nena seguirá luchando con corazón, sangre y pulmón para defender su derecho a la vida, recuperar sus tierras, restaurar su ecología y hacer de Vieques un lugar habitable para el pueblo viequense.
THE STRUGGLE FOR A FREE AND HEALED VIEQUES CONTINUES!
San Romero of the Américas Church celebrated Father’s Day and the seventh Sunday of Pentecost welcoming our brother and comrade, Ismael Guadalupe- internationally recognized for his work for the independence of Puerto Rico and, the liberation and restoration of Vieques. Ismael reminded us, “ The struggle of Vieques continues!”
We celebrated Father’s Day in light of the Gospel of Luke (9:18-24) and listening to the testimony of our brother Ismael. We engaged in reflecting on the responsibility we have as Christians, revolutionaries, and/or persons who believe and practice peace with justice to contribute in the creation of a new and better world- now! Ismael reminded us that the people of Vieques and the international community’s solidarity gained a victory in the struggle of pushing out the criminal US Navy from Vieques. However, the struggle was not over when the navy left. The displacement that feeds capitalism and leaves Viequense families without a place to call home continues. Cancer continues to develop among the population. Ismael shared, “The people of Vieques are ill. The fishes are contaminated and we eat those fishes. The same happens with the vegetation.” Ismael’s testimony is the testimony of the people of Vieques, of Palestine, of Vietnam, and of all who have been colonized. It is also the testimony of resistance of all of the people in the world who have not lost hope and are committed to continue the struggle for healing, collective wellness and liberation. His testimony, as is the Gospel of Jesus, is a call to bear our cross and continue walking towards victory.
While, it is true that the problems caused by the greed of a few, creates scarcity for many. It is also true that the firm conviction of the people of Puerto Rico towards their independence gives testimony that the people are strong and will not give up. Long live the student strikes!
While, it is true that US imperialism and its navy insists in making Vieques a dead land with sick people and a poisonous ocean. It is also true that the people of Vieques will continue to fight with their heart, blood and lungs to defend their right to live, to own their lands, and restore the ecology and make of Vieques a habitable place for the people of Vieques.
